Ponder: How Can I Reflect Christ In A Secular World?

5 minute read

Ponder This:  How can I reflect Christ in a secular workplace/school/world? Scripture to consider.

Scriptures To Consider: "Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God" -Ephesians 5:1-2

Reflections From The PrayerBowl Team:

As practicing Christians, we are called to be a reflection of Christ, but in our secular world, it can be intimidating. Pondering this question can help us discover ways to share the love of Christ in a broken world.

1. First and foremost, before we can reflect Christ, we must truly know Christ. Reading the Gospels allows us to see the heart of Jesus in action. Knowing Jesus will enable him to become our role model, filling us with inspiration and joy.

  • 1 Peter 2:21 -  "For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps."

2. Jesus is relational. He loves people. He puts others first, he encourages, he cares, he invites. To reflect Christ in a secular world, we must go out into the world and build relationships with those whom God has placed in our path. Get to know them, show them kindness, and encourage them. Then, when given the opportunity, we can share the Good News.

Often for me, it is easy to stay in my comfy place of working at PrayerBowls, going to Bible Study, and going to church. While being in a bubble with faithful friends is amazing, hiding from the secular world isn't what God wants from me. This PONDER is an excellent reminder that my purpose is to shine God's light, not hide it away.

  • Philippians 2:5-7 - "In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant"
  • Matthew 5:14-16 - “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven."

3. Grow Good Fruits - I love that this year we are focusing on the Fruits of the Spirit because it has been the reminder I need that these great gifts from God are available to me through His Spirit. Even the secular world still appreciates all of these qualities in a person, so let's share a plentiful harvest of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, self-control, gentleness, and faithfulness. When we continuously share these fruits at work, school, or in the world, people notice, and they might even ask, "How do you have so much patience with _____? Or "How do you have peace through this difficult trial?" This is the moment we will be able to point to Jesus and bring glory to God our Father.

  • John 15:8 - "When you produce much fruit, you are my true disciples. This brings great glory to my Father."

”As I ponder how I can reflect Christ in a secular workplace, school, or World, I realize it begins with how I live my daily life…”
I believe it starts with how I live out my faith through my actions, demeanor, and my values.
Reflecting Christ does not always require wordsor only speaking about it - it is demonstrated in how I treat others, showing honesty and truthfulness, carrying out peace and joy throughout my day.  It’s evident in my patience, kindness, and humility, even when things are challenging.
A powerful way to reflect Christ in the World is to be a source of encouragement to those who are struggling.  Offering hope when friends feel discouraged, or always be willing to help, especially when it’s not convenient or when no one else offers. I should strive to avoid gossip or negativity because I know that is not how Christ would live.  I believe my actions speak louder than words. I want to be known for being a kind, honest, dependable, forgiving, and encouraging person in everything I do. I think it is essential to show compassion and empathy, taking the time to listen to others and be truly present for them.
I think it is meaningful to share my stories about my family, church, and how my faith influences my choices, but to do so gently and respectfully. I also believe in the quiet power of prayer, asking God daily for kindness, wisdom, and strength for my family, friends, neighbors, and coworkers.

Two scriptures that I reflect upon to help guide me, encourage me, and carry this out are Matthew 5:14-16: “You are the light of the World… Let your light shine before others…”

Colossians 3:23 “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord…”

These verses help me keep my focus on what matters most. Even in a secular world, I can be an example of a quiet light, pointing others to God through the way I live.
