Ponder This: What spiritual “dry seasons” have taught me the most about dependence on God?

Scripture To Consider: I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you, in a dry and parched land  where there is no water. -Psalm 63:1

Tom's Response: I ran across this 7-minute video on this topic and wanted to share it with you.  I particularly like the part at the end on intercessory prayer.  That's what we do here... we pray for each other.

What if I don't desire to pray?

Karen's Response: Throughout my life, I have had seasons when my relationship with God felt dry - times when I couldn’t hear His voice, or times when spiritual practices that once made me feel connected just left me feeling flat. Like David in Psalm 63, I have had my whole being long for God.

God tells us there is a season for everything, and He teaches us throughout each one. The most important thing I have learned during these dry seasons is that God uses His quietness to call me to deeper trust. He is teaching my faith to go beyond feelings and circumstances so that my dependence on Him becomes central. Not just when I am in His presence or can feel the Spirit guiding me, not just when my prayers are answered, or I am fired up by praise music, but through it all - through every situation.

Another lesson God has taught me through the dry seasons is the importance of reading Scripture and having key verses tucked into my heart. The evil one is constantly lurking and looking for opportunities to whisper lies, and in spiritual dry seasons, he gets to work. Using God’s Word - His truths and promises that never fail - is my spiritual battle armor. Jesus already crushed Satan and declared victory; I just need to remain dependent on Him.

Once you have been held by God, walked side by side with Jesus, and felt the nudge of the Holy Spirit, you know you can’t live without it; you long for it. Being in a dry season reminds me how much I need God and how dependent I am on Him every day. That longing has drawn me closer to my Creator, the one alone who can truly satisfy the deepest needs of my soul.
