Ever since I was little, I have been humming random tunes in my head – mostly songs I heard on the radio, but sometimes original melodies would just pop into my head. Still humming at age 35, I now look back and see how God was preparing me all along for the songs He would inspire me to write!
A few months into the Coronavirus global pandemic, I realized I had stopped humming. Survival mode had kicked in, and I was feeling numb by the “New Normal.” I remember driving my kids around town as my 3-year old daughter belt out her new favorite Frozen 2 song, “INTO THE UNKNOWN!” while my 6-year old son sang Elton John’s “I’M STILL STANDING, YEAH YEAH YEAH!” at exactly the same time. Both melodies clashed horribly with each other, but their messages strangely described how I was feeling…into the unknown…but I’m still standing.
I quieted them both down when I heard my new favorite song come on the radio, “Alive & Breathing” by Matt Maher. Something stirred my soul in the chorus every time he sang, “If you’re still alive and breathing, praise the LORD.” Without even realizing it, I had been living the pandemic life kind of like “Groundhog Day” – each day looked the same and the end was nowhere in sight. I was not seeing the beauty of the present, and I was missing all the blessings that were happening right in front of me…more time with my family, more time at home, more time for slowing down, more time with God, and more time doing things that really matter.
In that moment, I felt God leading me to write a worship song that would help me and other people move forward!
Full of excitement, I sat down at the piano and began to journal all my thoughts on paper. I waited for the melodies to come…for the lyrics to come…for the inspiration to come…but nothing came to me – except silence. I just wanted to get my hum back! Instead, I got silence. I became frustrated, and along with everything else in my life, I blamed it on the Coronavirus.
After three months with very little progress, I was ready to give up on the song.
Sometimes God has to get us to the end of our rope so that we can do what we should have done all along – just let go and depend on Him. I prayed and admitted that I was trying to write this song all on my own strength, and I needed God to do what only He can do. That is when God put this verse into my head…
“Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” –Matthew 6:21
Isn’t it amazing how the Holy Spirit uses scripture at just the right moment to get us thinking about what He wants us to think about? I began to ask myself “What am I treasuring right now? What am I giving my heart to?”
This question inspired me to write “Jesus, I Give You My Heart,” a song that speaks directly to our greatest need in life – a true relationship with Jesus! If there is anything the Coronavirus has shown us, it is that circumstances change. Valleys, storms, and heartbreaks will come. But Jesus is the only constant through it all, and our greatest treasure comes when we give our hearts to Him!
Below are the scripture references for each line in the song. As you read them, I hope you will see how God truly inspired every part of it.
“I worship You in the valley” – In Psalm 23:4, David says, “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me.”
“I worship You through the storm” – In Matthew 7:24-25, Jesus says, “Everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.”
“I worship You in the heartbreak” – In Psalm 34:18, David says, “The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
“When I’m weak, You are strong” – In 2 Corinthians 12:9, God says, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”
“In the morning, in the evening, Your love keeps me breathing” – In Ezekiel 37:6, God says, “I will put breath in you, and you will come to life. Then you will know that I am the LORD.”
“Every hour, every season, Your love keeps me singing” – In Ephesians 5:19, Paul says, “Sing and make music from your heart to the LORD.”
“From the sunrise to the sunset, You’re with me every moment” – In Joshua 1:9, God says, “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.”
“Even when I don’t know where You are, Jesus I Give You my heart” – In Psalm 13:1-2, 5-6, David says, “How long, Lord? Will You forget me forever? How long will You hide Your face from me? How long must I wrestle with my thoughts and have sorrow in my heart...But I trust in Your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in Your salvation. I will sing the LORD’s praise, for He has been good to me.”
“This is how I move forward” – In Philippians 3:13-14, Paul says, “Forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead. I press on toward the goal to win the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”
My prayer is that this song will encourage you as you walk through the valleys, the storms, and the heartbreaks of this life. The only way to move forward is to praise God and give our hearts fully to Jesus. So go find a quiet place to listen to this song by clicking on the link below. Then share it with everyone you know! I pray this song will help you move forward the same way it has helped me. And who knows? You may even find yourself humming the tune in your head later just when you need it the most!
